A tsuba is a hand guard of Japanese sword which is a round or occasionally rectangular shaped metal piece.

It says that a fierce battle between two samurai with catching their swords with tsuba and pushing back hard each other and they cannot move at all. This situation is called “tsubazeriai.” This samurai battle word became to be used for a close game or a hot competition in Japanese today.
